THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. FRIDAY, APRIL 9, 1880.
Feneion, in his Telemachus, says, " Above all things be on your guard against your temper. It is an enemy that will accompany you everywhere, to the last hour of your life. If you listen to it, it will frustrate all your designs. It will make you lose the most important opportunities, and will inspire yon with the inclinations and aversions of a child to the prejudice of your gravest interests." Had the advice contained in the above extract been borne in mind and followed by the Mayor and Councillors of the Borough of Thames, it would not to-day be our duty, though a very disagreeable one, to refer to the proceedings of last night's meeting. A want of tact was shown by His Worship, and a want of consideration for his position and the circumstances was displayed by the Councillors. From every point of view the exhibition is much to be regretted, and cannot in its effects, either improve the position of the Borough, or increase that respect and esteem due by burgesses to the men elected to manage the affairs of the municipality. Neither the matter of the asphalt and the position of the Foreman of Works were sub* jeets of sufficient importance to lead to the display of feeling exhibited. The resolution proposed by Cr Osborne, "That the Mayor under the circumstances was justified in considering his asphalt account settled," might have been carried, which would have done much to allay the soreness upon both sides, and would have been an evidence that Councillors were willing to make every allowance under the eircum* stances. We advise His Worship on the other hand not to resign his office, and believe that a little forbearance on both sides, and a determination not to again allow such small matters to excite discussion, would restore that good feeling and unanimity of purpose which should exist between the Mayor and his Council, as among men entrusted with the manage* ment of grave concerns, and eager only f» dicsharge their duties faithfully And for the general good.
