Capt. Colbeck addressed his constituents at Waipu last night and received a vote of confidence. He said he had no faith in Macandrew as a leader, nor in Grey as a financier.
Pleuro pnuemonia is rapidly spreading the Waikato. Two farms at Ohaupo are proclaimed as infected.
Communications is proceeding between Auckland and Southern members with a view to forming a compact opposition next session. Grey's Invercargill speech is expected to sound the keynote of the new party. Grey is expected to address the electors at Theatre/Auckland, before going south.
A hundred and fifty persons attended the meeting of the Auckland Skating Society last night including many ladies. Mr Whitaker was elected President.
Agricultural statistics show a great falling off in the average yield of crops caused by sparrows and pheasants.
The Waitemata Connty Council demur to the deduction of £324 by the Government from the subsidy for alleged destitute members, denying any real destitution exists in the County.
The Eegatta Committee have fixed the Champion Four-oared Outrigger race at £125, and the Champion Schooner race, fifty tons and upwards, £100.
The outbreak of pleuro-pneumonia on two more farms in the W^aikato causes great anxiety. All aftected localities are proclaimed infected districts.
At the last meeting of the Kingites at Kopua and Hikurangi, Tawhaio and Te Ngakau were absent. The latter is in disgrace in consequence, of the want of tact shewn at the meeting with Grey, Sheehan and Rewi. A number of important men were present, Te Whiti being invited but declining, the Eingites being antagonistic to him.- Eoads and surveys in some cases are freely spoken of, and a strong feeling was manifested regarding the importance of preserving peace.
If any notable chiefs would take the lead, large areas of King country would be thrown open.
Tawhiao is concentrating his people at Kawhia where a large permanent settlement is being formed.
