We have had in our midst for some time the nucleus of what may eventually turn out an extensive industry-—we allude to the hematite 1 works. In a conversation with Mr Edwards this day, we have gleaned a good deal of information respecting it, and his opinion as to its success as a future source of industry was given cheerfully. He tells us that he has received but scant support at the Thames, not having as yet supplied more than 2owt. all told, but he accounts for the smallness of the. support to dullness, and some of firms having a large stock of the Nelson manufacture on hand, which is but natural that they should endeavor to get rid of before commencing with Thames material. He finds that in Auckland and elsewhere the paint is gradually making its way into the market; the Kaipara railway bridges are now being painted with it, also buildings belonging to the Water Works, ships, etc, and he is now busy executing a large order for an Auckland firm. A,misapprehension has gone forth that he was not pushing the matter forward, but this he confutes by shewing a stock manufactured on his premises ready for delivery as orders arrive.
Many citizens will be glad to notice in our Auckland telegrams that Mr W. Eadcliff Hunter has been acquitted on the charge of making a false declaration of marriage.
We notice that the New Zealand Accident Insurance Company is making good headway in Auckland, the infant Company having already paid several claims. We are surprised in a community like the Thames, that more business is not done, such an Association being suited to the wants of a goldmining district.
The funeral of late Volunteer Holding will take place to-morrow. The members of the Scottish Battalion and other corps are requested to attend.
At the monthly meeting of the Orphanage Committee yesterday afternoon the net proceeds of the late concert in aid of the bridge fund were reported to be £45 16s, and it was decided tc request another gentlemen to prepare another plan of a suspension bridge over the creek in addition to those already sent in. A donation of £3 3s was acknowledged from the Naval Brigade. Accounts passed amounting to £70 2s, and the monthly report of the master was received.
Oiticebs of Volunteer companies are requested to meet at Mr Lawless' this evening. \
