DUNEDIN.

Last night

Judge Williams in bis charge regretted the calneder was one of the heaviest for many years. In considerably the majority of cases, the crimes were traceable directly to the drinking habits, unfortunately so prevalent in the colony. He spoke of Butlers case as one standing alone in its horrible prominence. Crimes of the kind, fortunately for human nature, were exceptional. Grand jury returned true bills in the following cases, and prisoners pleaded guilty•:—Earnest Sydney, James Henry Con way, both lads, three months for robbery; Edward Featherston and James Murphy for robbery, one year; Henry Fell, for forgery two years; James Midgeby for cutting and wounding 18 months.

This day. Butler this morning applied for a change of venue on the ground that the public mind was prejudiced against him. The Judge refused to grant the application, considering such prejudices did not exist, but granted a postponement of the trial till Thursday week to enable the prisoner to prepare his defence. Gormon's Kirtleburn hotel, 9 miles from Cromwell has been totally destroyed by fire. , It was insured in the Union Office for £500.
