THAMES HEMATITE.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib,—Whether the vast quantities of hematite now Jying useless at Tarari^ are to be transformed into piles of haiff^ cash by a proposed new company, or by a shrewd speculator or two in after years is the question. That the real bona fide brown hematite is there in vast masses there is no doubt. Seeing is bettering, and I hare visited Mr Bennett's claim, taken samples, and made the same into a "pigment." I have not the necessary , muller and stone .to give the hematite a fair trial, and have simply rubbed it by by hand power as fine as possible, and find it excellently adapted for the uses to which anti-corrosive paints are usually put. In regard to the ochre derided by " Pigment" ia this morning's Advertiser, I can affirm that it will answer all the purposes ft* which yellow ochre, Venetian red, Spanish brown, and red oefcre are now imported. Mr Bennett has furnished Mr Tunny with a sample of hematite, not " ochre," which will take the wind out of "Pigment's" sails. If " Pigment" is the person I jmsgine to be he knew but very little of hematite'when he first commenced its manufacture, as it was from me he took the hint to submit it to the action of fire; had he attended to the business instead of idling he would doubtless still be in employment. " Pigment," who has a smattering of knowledge on universal subjects, evidently lias the hemiplegy on the subject of hematite, or is chagrined at the idea of another man carrying through successfully, what he by inattention has allowed to collapse. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and when I hear a man talking like a book, I aim apt to imagine his knowledge is theoretical and not practial. Theory of subjects should be studied, but practice fhould accompany the study. I believe there is money in Bennett's hematite for those who ultimately take the matter up. I agree with F. McLiver that a little money combined with perseverance and muscle, is worth more than the heaviest consignment of theoretical knowledge.-* lam&c, W. J". Bablow.
