Wa regret to learn that the foot race between Detective Farrell and Mr MeMinamen will not come off owing* to one of the parties backing out. Both men weigh a trifle under 15 stone, and both appeared to be quite earnest in the matter one.of them staking his £5, -while the other promised to do so next day. Mr Farrell went in for vigorous training, rising before cock crow to take bis spin, and living most abstemiously.

At a late meeting of the Waste Land Board, Mr Firth stated he considered it advisable that Mr T. Russell's claim to a part of the Te Aroha block should be contested by the Board. He therefore moved, "That the attention of the Government be drawn to the matter of securing and adjustment of Mr Russell's claim over Te Aroha land in order that no difficulty may arise in the way of Messrs Grant and Foster's scheme.''—

The rumors that the changes the Government were making in the Native Department would affect officials in this district have been verified by their dispensing with the services of Mr E. W. Puckey, who severed his connection yesterday. Mr Puckey has been for 10 years -Native Agent in this district, and 17 years in the employ of the Government, and has? always proved himself to be a thorough gentleman, and a most trustworthy and persevering official. Mr Puckey's services have been of great value, and we think that reductions might have been made in other directions before the services of such an officer were dispensed with.

The troop got through the • settlement, however, in safety, though, we hear that several have the mellon colics very bad.
