Waikato Cavalry Races.
For the amusement of the members of the Waikato Cavjlry a number of our local sports, together with some'Waikato gentlemen, arranged a scratch race meeting, which came off today. At one o'clock there was a large attendance at the Parawai Racecourse, and while the pleasure seekers were waiting for the races to commence, they amused themselves discussing the points of the horses, and in trying their lupk at several games of chance. The day was all thai could be desired, and great interest appeared to be taken in the events. (Peb Pigheon Expbess.) , Pabawjj, 1.40 p.m. ' There are about 700 people on the Course, and the Cricket Match is just commencing. It is attracting a fair share of attention. 1. MAIDEN CAVALRY RACE, of 6 soys., second horae 1 soy; for all trjop horses that have never won public money ; entrance, 7s 6d; distance, 1£ times round the course ; aged horses to carry lletj 51bs allowed for every year under 6 years. Mr Selby's Canute ... ... ... 1 Mr Cuseen's Cockey ... ... ... -2 Mr Kelly's Charlie ...... ... 3 Canute took the lead from the first, and won as he liked, coming in a length ahead of Cockey. The winner was loudly cheered. - 2. HANDICAP CAVALRY HURDLE RACE, of 10 soys,j second horse, 2 soys; twica round the course over six flights of hurdleß, 3ffc 6in high; entrance, 10s. Mr Brindle's Loafer ... ... ... 1 Mr Kelly's Misfortune ... ... ... 2 Canute and another also started. The race was a gift to Loafer, though young Pilling, who rode Misfortune, palled up considerably towards the finish. 8. THAMES CUP HANDICAP, of 10 soys. j three times round the course; entrance, 15s j open to all horses. . Emu ... ... ... ... ... 1 Sweetbriar ... ... ... ... ... 2 Eclipse, Snowstorm, Emu, and Sweetbriar competed. The two former carried overweight. Emu led from the second round, and came to the post three lengths ahead of Sweetbriar. Eclipse and Snowstorm gave up. Tlie former was almost first when she was pulled up. 4. MAIDEN CAVALjRY HURDLE RACE, of 6 soys. j twice round the course, over six" fight of Hurdles, 3lt, 6in high's. I entrance, 7a 6d, Same conditions as 1 -first race.'
Derby ... ... ...... ... 1 Firteet; ... ... .... ... .... 2 Eight horses competed. They changed places frequently during the race, which lenders an account of it impossible.
