Death of Hotereni Taipari.

Old Hptereni Taipari, one of the chiefs this district, died at his residence, Parawai, early this morning. The deceased chief was a very intelligent native, and his demise will be regretted not only by his countrymen, but also by many of the old European residents of the district, with whom he was intimately acquainted. His son, W. H. Taipari, will succeed to his landed property. The deceased was tlie head of the Ngatiratau hapu of the Ngatimarau tribe. He was instrumental in opening the Thames

gold field, his influence being sufficient to break down, the strong opposition to the opening of this portion of the peninsnla to the then hated pakeha. Hotereni's age was about 80. Natives from all parts of the district will tnke part in his obsequies. He leaves £1000 Lo be spent on his tangi.
