Last night
The action for libel, G. G. Stead v. the Directors of the Otago Daily Times and Witness Company (limited), was tried today at the R.M. Court, before Mr Mellish and Mr Olivier. Mr. Packman appeared for the complainant, and Mr Garrick for Mr Fenwick, i he only defendant who was present. His Worship, after a long argument between counsel, on the question of issuing warrants for the attendance of the remaining Directors, decided to adjouin to Monday, after hearing what evidence could be taken. An instance of cheap labour was shown yesterday in the Amberley Court. Two able-bodied and skilled blacksmiths were summoned for a debt of £10, and pleaded they were working merely for food and whatever the master pleased to allow them. ■■■•■-.■
The Bicycle Club hold the championship races with two events of five and twenty miles on April 17th at Hagley Park. J
The Volunteer visitors have signified their intention to be present at the Easter Review. 684 will be billeted in houses, and the rest under canvass, and cater for themselves. Anderson's paddock, Cashel street, and Rivers' Manchester-street, have been placed at the disposal of the committee during the week.
