THE SULTAN'S EXPENSES.
In a work published recently on Imperial Life in Turkey, it i* stated that the cost of the Sultan's establishment of wives and slaves is two millions sterling per annum, but I am informed that this does not represent the whole sum, which reaches quite three millions sterling. This is more than is spent on the whole Hoyal Establishment of England, including pensions to "our sisters, and our cousins, and our aunts " from Germany. Greater than the cost of either the countries of Germany, or Austria, or Russia, yet it only represents the personal expenses of the Sultan, not the actual cost of his court. No wonder the Turkish bond-holders are becoming desperate and clamour to Lord Salisbury to put the screw on. : . i
