Cobojundei, v." Thames. Tho match Coromandel r. Thames was played yeiterday, the 17tK mat. at Coromandel, and proved another win for our local knights of the willow, though a ▼cry poor team went down, owing to many of the best players having to remain behind in consequence of other engagements. As may be seen by the list of names, many old and prominent cricketers are conspicuous by their absence. The cricketers went down in the s.s. Coromandel on Tuesday night, return)ug early this moraing. On arrival at the ground the uiual preliminaries were gone through; the Thames team elected Mr Geo. Burgess ai their Captain, of course Coromandel was Captained by Mr Gatland. Tho local Captain won the toss, and as is usual with Thames teams on such occasion!, sent the Coromandel men to the wickets, Cadman and Norman appearing at the wickets to the bowling of. Burgess and Gray. The players seemed determined to make a stand, blocking with lbut few runs" was the order of the day, and an hour elapsed, with successive change of bowlers, before they were parted, but Gray, who bowled well throughout, took Cadman's wicket, and Beeson'a fell to Gray's next ball, while in the next over Egginton compelled Norman to retire.' This changed tue state of affairs, and the wickets were taken quickly after, their iDnings closing for 72. Tery little delay was made, tie Captain of the Thames team and Gray appearing at the wickets, but Gray's lite was of short duration as he was bowled by Norman in the first over ; Murphy joininu his captain, scored 2* and was also bowled by Beeson ; Egginton was bowled by Norman, as were Harrison and Munro, all in about 15 minutes. Five wickets down for 8 runs. It was now generally thought that a repetition of a former day's play would be enacted, when the Thames team of cricketers wer« disposed of for 13 runs, but Burgess put a few together, with the assistan.ee of Becker and Turner, but only sufeceedefrin making 58, thus Crromptfjel had 14 points to the Rood. It wd^now 1 p.m., and the Coromandel men agifin appeared i at the wickets in the same order as in the ! first, and the cautious play was indulged i in, but Cadman's wicket fell to Gray for 12 runs. Beeson joined Norman and I remained at the wickets till 2 p.m., when j I the welcome sound of the dinner bell was heard, and an adjournment made to Mr t I Boyd's hotel 'where the tables. groaned | under the weights of gocd things provided for the players. After' . all were j thoroughly satisfied, at 3 p.m., time , was called and the play commenced i with renewed vigour. 'Change of bowlers j was tried, but without effect, and as a last : recourse Murphy was put on, and liis | second ball—a. full pitched one —com- j pelled Norman to retire: Gibbs was [ treated in the same manner, and Torner obliged Beeson to retire in his next over. Goldswortfiy was playing very well, pnd' putting runs together, but Murpby otfcnpelled him also to retire.: Itaynor, a| young lad played well.for 14 and their 2nd , innings closed for 108, and 14 from Ist i innings making 12a, or 123' for the iharacs men to make to win. The long shadows on the ground indicated the approach of evening, and at 430 ..the, Thames commenced their 2nd innings, , and Murphy,' alter making 3, was ajjain bowled by Benson, and Eggin- , ton and Burgess looked like making, mo?,- but Kgginton retired to- a trimmer from Beeson for 4. Gray comrnenerd with a 4, and in less than 25 minutes oral 5 p.m. Thames had 50 scored. This Rrowped the Coromandel men, and change after change of bowlers was made, Gray retiring for 17. Harrison did a pretty gaiml <or 19. Becker and Turner hit out as it was now nearly 6 p.m., when-, the wickets must be drawn, each successive hit bruin by cheers from tho Thames men, as but very few more runs were Hauler) to score a win, and at 4 minutes to 6 p.m., Turner sent one for 4 tlir^u^h liio Knee ' iutD the creek thus winning by 2 runs and 5 wickets to fall. .As may be imagined there was a great deal of hard funning, the fielding on both sides was very fair, but I think Egginton deserves great praise for the manner in which he fielded, throughout the day, all worked hard and unitedly, and the greatest harmony existed throughout between both teams. Thii is the first win the Thames men have scored for a number of years against the Coromandelites, when playing on their own ground. . ' COROMANDEL. Ist Isninos. 2nd Innings.
