A new evening paper to be called the Echo, price a halfpenny, wi". be issued on Saturday.
Information has been received from Wellington this afternoon of the arrest of Edgar t Barringer, bank agent of Kaikoura, recently transferred from Leeston, for embezzling £30 belonging to '.the Bank. Ie is said that further charges ! of a similar nature will be prepared against the accused. Barringer was removed from the Chvistchurch office to Leeston two years ago, and always bore the character of a steady and respectable man. He is marred and has a family.
Thacker's hotel at O'Kain's Bay, Bankt Peninsula, was burnt down last night, and nothing was saved. Mr and Mrs Thacker escaped with difficulty from the burning building. The stock and furniture were insured in the South British for £1200.
