THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17, 1880.
Fbom the published reports of the deputations of our local representatives to the members of the Government now in Auckland we cannot flatter ourselves that much good to the place has been the result. In the matter of the reimbursement of the £2300, wrongfully deducted from the municipal subsidies, the matter, after being clearly explained to the Premier, an enquiry was promised.. Although this promise may seem fair enough, it too closely resembles the stereotyped expression of the Hon. Mr Whitaker ; and when it is remembered the claim was fully laid before both the present and the late Ministry, but little reliance can be attached to Mr Hall's promised enquiry. The deputation next intrdduced the question of the non-payment of the £500 promised to the Borough by Mr Sheehan while Native Minister irom the vote in aid of road in native districts. This matter was referred by the Premier to Mr Bryce, which in our opinion is simply a polite, way to shelving the matter, as the Hon. the Native Minister has already written to the Borough refusing to fulfil the-promise of his predecessor, although that promise was made in writing. Again we cannot see why the Government should be so chary about giving an expression of opinion on the Borough claim to the Grabamstpwn-Tararu tramway, seeing that they have in their possession at Wellington papers which plainly state the position of the claim. When the question of the railway was broached an attempt was made to wriggle out of it by giving as a reply the gossamer excuse that the papers being absent they could not give a definite answer. However it was ascertained that Mr Olliver will have full power to deal with the question whether the railway will go on or not upon his arrival in Auckland. The plain fact of the matter is we may not expect the railway to be proceeded with this side of the session, and perhaps the future construction of it will be made in Parliament the price of of the adhesion of some of our Auckland and Waikato representatives.
