An inquest was held on the body of. Thomas Birch, who died on board the s.s. Penguin suddenly. The evidence showed that deceased had buen ailing on passage up, and after leaving Gisborne got worse. He took a fit and died in fire minutes. He had obtained some chlorodyne at Napier, which was the only medicine he took on the voyage. The medical evidence showed that death resulted from aneurism of the heart, and it is a wonder he had lived so long. A verdict of " death from natural causes," was returned. 26s were found on the body, and while the inquest was going on the purser discovered £96 in bank notes in bis underclothing. He was en route for the Waiwera Hot Springs for his health. The fumigation of the barque Earl Granville was completed last night, and to-day the vessel was admitted to pratique. She is expected to come up the harbor this afternoon, and the discharge of her cargo will be proceeded with as rapidly as possible. There are no fresh cases of fever on the island, and it is probable that ihe passengers by the vessel will be brought up from Motuihi during the course of next week.
