GIVE ME THE NIGHT.
0! give me the night, I love the night, • And let roam at the dawn who may; ■■._•■ The morning's gold may be grandly bright, But the night must bear the sway, When the moon is up, and the stars are out, And no cloud floats over the blue, And a stillness reigns o'er the hills and plaint; That are drinking in the dew. 0! give me the night, I love the night, When I may look into the sky, And meet no glare of blazing light, To harass and tire the eye; - , - .'- But feast my sight on the countless worlds ■ That adorn the bewitching blue, While their watch they keep, o'er the earth asleep, That is drinking in the dew.' 0! give me the night, the glorious night, With its flood of silvery beams, That draws me up, in a fairy flight, To the world from whence it streams, s And on and away from gem to gem, That illumines the vaulted blue: As the early bee goes from flower to tree, To sip nectarial dew. O! give me the night, tho blesaed night, When the din of the day is o'er, And the over-burdened sons of might, Remember their broils no more; - But take their rest, with a brow and breast As calm as the tranquil blue: . 'Tis their happy part of night's Hoothing art, As to earth the genial dew^. . .. , Then hurrah! for the night, the priceless night, ', . ; With its wondrous.temp'ring hand, .' That sets limbs,.and nerves, and brains aright,... With a touch of its magic wand, And assigns a season of truce to all - 'Heath its curtain of spangled blue. Ere it flits away, with the dawn of day, As silently as the dew. Jas. Simpson, Thames.
