This day. Reception of Rifls Representatives. The Naval and Artillery Volunteers are arraDjjing a x-eceptiou to Thomas, the winner of the Carbine Belt and the other competitors. Mr Heaphy is holding an inquiry into the old land claims, the most important case is that of Captain Beadon, K.JN., who claims a large portion of the Piako Swamp now in the possession of the Piako Swamp Company.
Mr Buckland advocates a subscription : of £500 to the purchase of the remainder of the cattle introduced from New South Wales by W. Payne, with a view to their destruction. Mr Buckland publishes a letter from the Chief Cattle Inspector of Victoria, admitting that pleuro-pneumonia prevails throughout that colony. Last night. A meeting of Volunteer officers will be held to consider the proposals for improving the Volunteer force, to be submitted to Col. Leckie, who will forward the same to the Government. .
Dr Fox,, surgeon of the ship Earl Granville, died at the quarantine station, Motuihi, of low ferer.
