THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. MONDAY, MARCH 8, 1880.

A WMTJ3K in another column* directs attention to the fact that the questiotr of laying the large water mains to Shortland seems to have been forgottou, and suggesting that the matter should be taken up vigorously by some of our public men. It will be "remembered that repeatedly we have pointed out the urgent necessity for such a work, and even took the trouble to ask for private subscriptions for such a desirable object, but little interest seemed to be taken in the matter, and some of those whose interests were all Shortlandwards seemed the least earnest on the subject. The following, out of a number asked, were the only ones who responded :—M. H. Payne £10, J. Kenshaw £10, J. Marshall. £10, Hogg £5, Price Bros. £5, Dann £2, Wilkes £2, and Hansen £2. During the late visit of Mr Bell, of the Norwich Union Insurance Company, the proprietor of this journal requested him to bring the matter before the associated companies in Auckland, and asked that the sum of £200 should be given by the Companies interested for the purpose of laying the large 9 inch mains. Taking into consideration that onlj a very small sum—-£"SO a year—is contributed by the Insurance Companies towards the Fire Brigades on the . Thames, while in Auckland : the whole cost of maintenance is borne by them, the sum of £200 should not be too much to expect from an association so deeply interested as-are the various insurance offices doing business upon the goldfield. A single fire might easily entail a loss of a greater sum, and any night might witness the destruction of an entire block of buildings, for the supply of water at present in Shortland" is quite insufficient to extinguish a fire. We'shall be pleased to find thai our correspondent's letter will have the effect of directing attention to the subject, and ending in the matter being taken" up vigorously, and not allowed again to drop' till the mains are laid from Albert street to Parawai.;
