Katikati Races.
One of the best country race meetings that has been held in the province of Auckland for some time past took place at Katikati on Wednesday. The weather was all that could be desired for such an occasion. There were 500 persons present, many of whom were Thames people, and Tauranga was well represented—a large coach drawn by four splendid greys visit- , ing the course twice during the day fronv ! the East Coast metropolis. The prizes were of good, value, and the handicapping excellent. Huedlb Race Handicap, of 20 sore: Dis- '■■'-■:• . stance: 2 miles. Foley's Little Dick (McLean) ... ... 1 Deiin's Naughty Boy (Twohill) ... ... 2 Ellis'Awahoe (May) ... ... ... 3 A good start being effected, the race was very close throughout, Little Dick winning by a bare length. . Katikati Handicap,. 30 soys Distance: 2 miles and a distance. Walsh and Quinliran's Matlock, Bst 81b, (Quinlivan) ... ... ... ... 1 Taylor's Vengeance, Bst 91b (May) ... 2 Ellis' Eclipse, 7sfc 101b (Sellers) ... ... 3 Devin'a Penrose, 7st 101b (Tanner) ... 0 This was the principal event of the day. After a capital start, the first time round Penrose bolted and was out of it, Vengeance and Kclipsa running close together. Matlock was 7 lengths behind till the last round, when Quinlivan. called on the little horse, who responded and passed his companions in grand style and won easily. . Seitieb's Pubse, 10 sotb.
