Dunedin Races.

Last night; v

• The Annual Race Meeting, which closed yesterday was very successful in every respect. There was a large: attendance, some good contests, and not the slightest hitch occurred during the meeting. ' ..,"/.• * :

Handicap Steeplechase of BGsovs - Scamp, aged, 9st 71b, 1; Robin Hood, aged, 9st 31b, carried 14lbs overweigh',;2; Thirlo, 6 years, 3. Betting—3 ito.4 "against Lonehand, 2 to 1 against Fcamp, 3 to 1 against /the others. Scamp led over the first hurdle^ a length in front of Lonehand,* and three lengths before Thirloj who nearly came to grief, Robin Hood, whojjame last, refused at the third jump, his jockey got unseated, and he lost a lot of time at the back of the course. Thirlo fell on landing over a jump, and dismounted>Cbtton, who was some time before he could catch his horse. The next catastrophe occurred at the gorse , hedge, where . Lonehand refused repeatedly- In the meantime. Scamp was sailing along . ahead' in beautiful stylej clearing, -all;. obstacles like a bird, 'past the sfcaud by a quarter of a mile. Robin Hood was by this time under way again, and .followed this distance'away while Thirlo was 200; yards behind, and Lonehand still refusing the hedge. ' From this point little requires to be said; Scamp haying things all his own way and winning by 200 yards, Kobin Hood secoridi Thirlo a bad third, Lonehand walking it. The totalisator httd £340,, there being 63 investors on the winner. Lonehand was offered at auction by ; Mr Stephenspn, Rod passed in at £'50/ ;' '" ;; -■■^ ■ '■'" Foebubt Handicap of 150 sots.— Foul Play 1, Chancellor 2; Libeller 3, Templeton 4, Atlantic 6. Bettiiig against Foul Play 3 to 1, Chancellor and Templeton 4 to 1, Libeller 5 to 1. After a false start the lot was sent off on level terms, but Foul Play immediately was taken to the front and led past the Stand, by a clear length, and next him came Chancellor, Libeller and Atlantic abreast, with Templeton last-. At the three-quarters of a mile Libeller quitted the company of Atlantic, and after racing with Chancellor for *' few hundred yards left him behind also, and

got up to Foul Flay. Before entering the straight, however, he was repassed by Chanceller, who chased the leader determinedly up the straight, but he could not, however, get nearer that his quarters, for Foul Play came in full of running, and Derritt sitting still on him landed him comfortably a winner by a length, Libeller a good third, Atlantic fourth, Templeton last. Time, 4mins. 44secs.

Queen's Plate of 80sovs, _with a sweepstake of Ssovs each; Weight for age—Mata, 1; Volunteer, 2. Betting— 100 to 1 on Mata. This race, which' threatened to be a walk over for Mata, produced about the most sensational struggle ever seen on the Forbury course. The pace was very slow at first, Nolan keeping Volunteer half-a-dozen lengths behind Mata, 300 yards from home he then called on the colt, and coming up hand over hand, caught Mata napping and fairly, passed him. When in the straight the excitement was intense, as Volunteer was seen to be fully half a length in front, and apparently gaining on the Cup winner. Mathews had to ride Mata desperately, but very gradually the latter commenced to make up bis lost ground, and two strides from the post Volunteer's head was in front, but just on the post Mathews managed to force Mata just far enough forward to justify the judge in declaring it a dead heat, 4mins 45secs. Nolan treated the spectators to a magnificent bit of riding, and the set to between the pair was very exciting. Mata afterwards had a walk over.

Flying Handicap, 80 soys, mile and a distance—Foul Play 1, Tera 2, Luna 3. Templeton, Chancellor - and Billingsgate also ran. Betting :2to 1 Foul Play, 2to 1 against Chancellor, 4 to 1 Billingsgate. After three false starts a capital one was effected, and Luna and Tera cut out the running, and made the pace a cracker past the enclosure, followed by Foul Play and Chancellor together, Billingsgate and Templeton bringing up the rear. For the first half mile there were few changes, but then Billingsgate went up to Luna and and looked going straight away, but_ be fell back rapidly, and Tera turned into the straight with a clear lead. Derritt now made his effort, and Foul ■ Play made his way through his horses, and very quickly shot up to the front and won hands down by half a length. Benevolest Scubet, 50 soys, a mileSpy 1, No Name 2, Sandfly 3,. „.' . CoNsoiATioV Handicap, GOsqvs, a mile —Libeller 1, Marie Antoinette 2, Chancellor 3. Won easily by Li beller."
