Thames Borough Council.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held at the Council Chambers last evening. Present—Crs Wilkinson (in the chair), Speight, Bawden, Oeborne, McGowan, Marshall, Mennie, Wilson. COBBESPONDENCE O^TWABD. A synopsis of the outward correspondence" since last meeting was read and confirmed. BAIILIE STEEET. A letter was read from the Kauaeranga School Committee drawing attention to the unsatisfactory nature of the watertable in froutof Kauaeranga Boys' School. The writers requested that a deputation of the Works Committee meet them on the matter. Eeferred to the Committee. APPLICATION. ! Mr J. C. Williams was granted per- j mission to cross with his horse both Queen i street and Kirkwood street footpaths un- | til the footpath is asphalted, when he will have a crossing constructed. MOAfIATAIBI TBAMWAY. A letter was read from the lessees of the Moanatsiri tramways complaining of the drainage from the Caledonian road injuring the tramway. A memo, from Ihe Foreman of Works accompanied the letter stating that the Borough was not responsible. Eeferred to the Works Committee. THE OBPHANAGE GBANT. The lion. P. Whitaker wrote stating that the amount of the Orphanage rote was £500 and not £800 as the Council supposed. No action was taken in the matter.
EEPOfiT OF WOBKS COMMITTEE. The report of the Works Committee was read as follows :—." The Committee hare to report that they have instructed the Foreman of Works to proceed at once with the sheet piling ot the hill now slipping on the Waiotahi Creek,-and also to put up auother dam to retain the debris at a point about 50 yards nearer the Waiotahi battery than the one last erected on this creek. With regard to the culvert placed across Richmond street by the Government, the Committee recommend that notice be sent to the Government that such culvert, from its position and shape, will sot keep itself clear, and request (bat it be altered to a V shaped culvert, and re laid at such angle at will give it a proper outlet to the draiu on the other side of same street,"
The report was received and adopted. THEPAYSHEET Was passed without comment. THE BAILWAY BECLAMATION.
The Chairman alluded to the necessity of an outlet being constructed through the railway embankment at Willoughby street, and, moved that the clerk be instructed to communicate with the Public Works Office at Auckland on the matter. Cr Marshall seconded. Carried. OBPHANAGE. The Town Clerk reported that the Inspector of Schools had visited the Orphanage re the matter of the Board of Education subsidising the master's salary. ITAILWAY COMPENSATION CLAIMS. .. The Town Clerk reported that the Mayor had submitted to the Government the names of two gentlemen to act as arbitrators re the railway compensation claims, and Ijad also telegraphed to Mr Oliver, asking when the next sections would be let, but no reply had yet been received.
THE WATEB SUPPLY TBANSfEB. Cr Speight said that with the Mayor be was authorised by the Council to sign the deed re the transfer of the Water Supply to the Borough. A new deechhad been submitted to them, and as it contained additional terms to those hP*^ the draft, they objected to sign it. . On the motion of Cr McGowan, it was resolved that the.action of the Committee be approved. On the motion of Cr Osborne the Council went into Committee on the matter, When it was resolved that Cr Speight should interview the Hon. Atorney-General on the subject, and lay the whole matter before him. ASPHALT BETITKN. Cr McGowan moved for a return showing the amount of asphalt laid in the Borough, the cost per yard, and the total, amount each person had paid. This concluded the business:
