PER SPECIAL WIRE TO "STAR."

(Pebsß Association.)

AUCKLAND.

Last night.

The Foreman of Fraser and Tinne's establishment was drowned to-day while bathing at Mechanic's Bay.

Arrived : Ovalu from Samoa. Files of Samoan Times to January 24th have been received. They contaju lit'lo news of interest. The United States Government has informed the U.S. Consul at Apia that a commercial agency has been established at Pagopago including only the island of Tu.t.uila. Mr Matthew Hunkin has been appointed Vice-Commercial Agent for that place with consular functions only, and all judicial matters arising within the agency must be broughi to the attention and consideration of the United States Consul at Apia. The French people who arrived by the Griffin from New Caledonia, are in great tribulation over the refusal of the owner of the vessel to deliver up their luggage unless they pay a charge which it is alleged he now mentions for the first time.

The difficulty is likely also to lead to an action for assault. It seems that Mr Peltzer, who has befriended; his unfortunate compatriots in many ways since their arrival, hearing of Mr Bishop's demaud, went down to the vessel and interviewed-the captain. He expressed his opiuions in vigorous terms, and he avers that the owners assaulted him by pushing him off the vessel, besides making use of threatening language towards him. The facts of the case will come out in due time.

Additional compensation claims have been sent in to £he Oily Council during the week to the extent of $I,6QQ.

The farmers are greatly agitated over pleuropneumonia.scare, aud desire Government to take stringeufc measures.
