The Lad in a dangerous state

One of tlie most fearful accidents it has been our lot to chronicle foy a long time, occurred yesterday afternoon to a lad named Alexander Waddell,. employed as slokor to O'Brien and Go.'t locomotive. It appears that at about fire o'clock in the gflernqon thp engine was at the tip at the foot of Richmond street, and Waddell, who had just coupled the trucks, attempted to jump on to the engine, which «'v« moving slowly. He had'a piece of flay in one hand, and probably owing to this missed his hold, and fell beside the ongine. B,efore he could utter" a; * cry-to attract the attention of the " driver the flange of the engine wheel had stripped the flesh from his leg "From foot to thigh and fearfully mangling the limb. The heartrending cry of the lad drew the attention of the-engine-driver, R. McQuade, and the locomotive was immediately stopped, p,n,d the unfortunate boy was dragged from under the wheel by Mr A. O'Brien. The sufferer was at once placed on a cab and conveyed to the Hospital, where Drs Payne and Huxtable were in attendance. The doctors speedily decided tha|; the^e was no hope 'of Saving' fhe .leg, and at half-past'six they amputated it below the hip joint. Be Payne informs us, that owing to the mangled Rendition of the the ajaputation was by no means an easy matter, and the .chances aro much against the patient's recovery, indeed according to the best medical authorities 66 per. penf; of the caaea wjiere amputation at \he thigh is necessary, aye fatal. In this case the shock' to the nervous system lja's been great, and there yr\\\ be ab additional dagger from suppuratipa and erysipelas. I'o-day tlje; lad was doing as well as could be expected under the circumstances.
