. The Middle Island Natire Land' Parchase Royal Commission is fitting #t fl\e Foresters' Hall, Bort Ghulmep. At .jiirp, o'clock -this afternoon the Court was con. stituted-as follows-: —Ex Judge Bm|j;b ; jfir |?erran, Commissioners j yf.v «f. Gray, of the Hansard office, shorthand writer,
and Hopkins Clarke secretary and interpreter. Mr Izard, of Wellington, appeared as counsel fur the natives, and addressed the Commissioners* at some length, and wound up by stating that the Maoris were there iv consequence of faith not having been kept with them that sufficient lands would be reserved for them. Judge Synionds, of the Native. Lands Court, was examined, and the Commission adjourned till to-morrovr, at 11 a.m. ,
A boy Darned Fullerton whilst bathing at Observatory Point, Port Chalmers, yesterday was seized by an octopus. His companion rescued him with difficulty.
Martin's Bay expedition returned to Queenstown last night' all well. They made a full examination of the country* which they report to be admirably adapted for cattle farming.
Contributions from Dunedin, South Dnnedin, and Port Chalmers to Irish Famine-Fund amounts'to £3.000. £200 more will probably be received.
