The late Cyclone
Further particulars-
The Griffin has brought intelligence of the cyclone in Caledonia. Incalculable damage occurred at Noumea. The countty plentations were destroyed, and fourteen vessels are missing,or slranded. Ti.e warship Caledonienne was in peril at one period, firing sign?ls of distress. Succour was decided as impossible by a council of war hastily summoned. She managed to weather it out. At the Islands of Man and Freycinct the publjc buildings (some of stone) were wrecked and dismantled. The Loyalty Islands experienced the centre of the tornado and terrible havoc was caused. The New Calidonia Administration and Municipality acted with promptitude and liberality. A subsidy of a hundred thousand francs was issued immediately for the relief of urgent distress!. A public subscription was headed by the Governor, and nearly 40,000fr. has already been disbursed. Four hundred soldiers were distributed among the people to assist in repairing their ruined dwellings.
