AUCKLAND. Yesterday. G. W. Another batch of Dempsey's men gofc judgment to-day for wages. Mr Eiccardi, First Lord of the Admiralty in H.M.S. Pinafore, did not get away from Auckland in peace, being sued in the E.M. Court: yesterday for £10 under the following circumstances. The plaintiff in this case is a lodging house keeper, and the defendant is a gentleman of distinction on the operatic stage. One Karl Eichty, a musiciau, applied to the plaintiff for board and lodging, but plaintiff would not give it without a guarantee for payment. Mr Eiccardi guaranteed that' if Eichty did not pay, he would ; and nothing more was heard of the matter until the bailiff presented himself on the outgoing steamer with a summons war* rant claiming the debt and costs. Mr Eiccardi paid £6 into Court as security for the debt and costs, and judgment was given for plaintiff for the amount with costs..

Anew feature has been introduced in land settlement by Captain Colbeck, namely, a special settlement for colonists exclusively, and already 5,000 acres are applied for. The native Heremaia, who was arrested at Helensville yesterday for robbery, made a desperate attempt to escape this morning. He watched his opportunity, knocked over the constable, and bolted, but was chased and captured by the railway officials. W. and T. Farqunar and Scott were bathing on the Ponsonby beaeb, when the latter took cramp. Walter Jones, of the Alert, put off in a dingey and rescued Scott, who was in the last stage of exhaustion. This is the fifth time Jones has saved life froni drowning, as he saved four men at the regatta in 1879.
