Sir George Grey, accompanied by His Worship the Mayor, Mr McOullough, President of the Hospital, and Mr Speight, M.H.E., visited this morning the Old Meu's .Refuge, the Hospital and the High School buildings Sir George Grey inspected each ward of the liefuge and Hospital, and spoke to each of the inmates, many of whom came from parts of the old country with which he was acquainted with, and about which he asked questions. The grounds adjourning both institutions he walked through complimenting the management upon the 1 admirable order iv which they were kept. The Hospital he thought a credit to the Thames, and spoke of the desirability of even acquiring further allotments of ground. After leaving the Hospital the party proceeded to the Orphanage. Mrs Ehrenfried, as one of the Committee, also went out. The drive was much enjoyed by Sir Gr. Grey, and with the Home and children he expressed himself highly gratified. He was pleased that the money granted by his Government had been so well and judicious!y. spent, and congratulated the Thames upon the possession of such charitable institutions as the Hospital, the Old Men's Kefuge, and the Orphanage.

The Hon. Mr Whitaker, accompanied by Mr MeCullough, President of the Hospital, Messrs Henshaw, Mcllhone, and J. Brown, visited on Saturday the Hospital and the Old Men's Refuge. Mr McCullough pointed out the wants of the several institutions, and the necessity of a grant of money to add to' the conveniences of both buildings and grouuds. Afterwards Mr Wbitaker was taken to see the High School properties, and the hon. gentleman inspected the school building apd expressed himself highly pleased with the selection made, and the desirability of having the school started at once. He promised to interest himself in having assistance given the Board by the Government. Mr Whitaker was then driven to the Convent Schools, through which he was taken by the Lady Superior, and expressed himself both pleased and gratified at the admirable arrangements provided for the education of the children attending the schools.

The evening class at the Kauaeranga Boys' School will be held this (Mondaj) evening, instead of Tuesday, on account of the St. George's Suuday School Soiree and Concert being held on that evening.

We are informed that 16 men's ground have been pegged out of the old Sunbeam claim, Tararu, and it is proposed to form a company to work the same. From the tunnel from Tararu battery a rise is to be put up, and stone from the mine can be sent down and crushed at a reasonable rate. From the locality mentioned some capital quarts was obtained in the early days. , . : ;""

We believe implication is to be made to the Government to reserve a portion of the goidfield situated in Tararu for the purpose of working the silver and lead ore discovered there some time ago.

Me Honiss, Secretary to the Hospital, desires us to acknowledge the receipt of the sum of eight shillings, same being Mr J. H. Walsh's fee as witness in the late case Taipari v. Race Committee.

The soiree of the Star of Hauraki Tent Independent Order of Eechabites will be held in the Templar Hall, Rolleston street, on Wednesday evening next, the 11th insfc.

The-annual soiree in connection with St. George's Sunday School will be held in the school house, Rolleston street, to-morrow evening. The Choir of the Church will be in attendance during the evening, and will contribute their quota towards the evening's entertainment.

A fully attended meeting of Thames Teachers was held on Saturday at the Waio-Karaka School, when several matters affecting the interests of teachers were discussed. The Secretary having reported the funds of the Association to be in a very flourishing state the meeting adjourned till May next.

Ma Sheehan may be expected upon the Thames at an early date, and it is to be regretted that business engagements prevented him from accompanying Bir George Grey. The telegram which Sir George Grey had from him on Saturday stated that prior engagements alone pre» vented him from being present.

The members of the Land Association are called together $t the Star Office this evening at 8 o'clock.

Mn Poeter has received a letter from the Waste Lands Board, slating that t'e land referred to by him in the Te Aroha block, aud whiph he recommended such be withdrawn from sale, ss It was probably auriferous was not under the control of the Board.

Messrs Gellion and Co., will sell tho Smile of Fortune forfeited shares at the exchange to-mprrow morning. The sale was postponed from to-day, owing to the notice of same being deemed insufficient.
