THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DALY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1880.

We regret exceedingly that oar contemporary should bare, in his issue of this date, ignored the marked and cordial reception given, to our member, Sir George Grey on his arrival at the Thames yesterday. Sir George was warmly cheered both on arrival of tbe boat, and also on his stepping on the wharf. Neither the Mayor or County Chairman went to receive the AttorceyGeneral; their respective Couhcils decided not to do so. As private individuals they were present at the landing and equally welcomed Sir George and Mr Whitaker to the district. The band in attendance was engaged .by the Thames Liberal Association to do honour to Sir George.

Me Whitakeb visited to-day the Hospital, the Old Men's .Refuge, and the Convent Schools.

Sib George Grey will address the electors at the Theatre Royal this evening, at 8 o'clock, and we have no doubt the place will be crowded, and that be will be as well received as on the palmiest days of his authority. Hi 3 Worship the Mayor will occupy the chair, aud we notice that the gallery has been reserved for ladies, and gentlemen accompanied by ladies.

The services at the Willoughby street Baptist Church to-morrow will be conducted by the Rev. T. L. Davies, the newly appointed Minister, who is very highly spoken of by those who have harl the benefit of his ministrations.

We learn on good authority that on Thursday next the Waitoa gentlemen who a short time ago engaged our local shootists in a friendly match will arrive at the Thames, prepared to do battle on behalf of their district and wipe out the defeat inflicted on the occasion referred to. Friday will be devoted to the rifle match, and on Saturday our cricketers will have act opportunity of. trying conclusions with them. A dance will probably wind up Friday's amusements.

Sib George Grey visited the railway reclamation works, the Tararu road, and the road to Tapu, this forenoon, and has taken memos of all the requirements of the Thames district.

The Waikato Times says:■—" A curious instance of the increasing value of land is to be found in a case which has just occurred in the Cambridge district. Some twelve years ago Mr Martyn took, as payment for ploughing up and grassing 40 acres of land, a pieco of ground containing 180 acres. This section he has just sold to Mr J. A. Douglas for £9 ppr acre.

The pantascope was again very well patronised last evening, in fact' the audience was the largest that has assembled to witness the show during the past week. The views were of the same interesting nature, and the venlriloqnism of M. Chalet was well received. The matinee this afternoon was crowded, and as every child received a present the satisfaction was of course general. Tonight an entirely new diorama will be shown, consisting of views of the Arctic Expedition of 1875-6. M. Chalet will perform "one of Dr Carver's miraculous shooting tricks, and lastly the gifts to be distributed are of both extra quality and value. So in spite of the counter attraction at the Eoyal we expect to see a good house.

Why waste your money and your children's time in music lessons while you have no piano f®r them to practice on, seeing that good instruments can always be obtained on easy terms of J. Grigg, Pollen street.—[Abvt.]
