LIBERAL ASSOCIATION.

A deputation of the Liberal Association waited on Mr Whitaker this morning. The. deputation consisted of Messrs Carpenter, W. Wood, Horn, R. N. Smith, and Denby. Mr Carpenter, who acted as spokesman, introduced the matter of the railway, and Mr Whitaker replied similarly as to the Borough and County deputations. Mr Carpenter said he aware the County Council had spoken to Mr Whitaker concerning the advisability of throwing open lands for small settlements in the immediate vicinity. He asked him to inform the deputation of the position of the matter.

Mr Whitaker made the same statement as to the County Council's deputation. He said the Government would do all they could in the matter of settling the people on small holdings.

Mr Carpenter asked what steps had been taken in the matter of the purchase of the goldfield. Mr Whitaker said he believed that negotiations had been in progress for the purchase of portions of the goldfield, and thought if opportunity offered the Government would purchase the goldfield. Ho believed the leases were issued in perpetuity. The deputation thanked Mr Whitaker and withdrew. -
