The Auckland Gas Company have declared a dividend of 7s Gd per share for the half year.
Wm. Samuel Tidmarsh, charged with assaults upon four women, got 6 months for three casts to run consecutively, and on the fourth was committed for trial for attempted rape,
A public meeting was convened by His Worship the Mayor, for the purpose of devising some means of contributing towards the alleviation of the distress in Ireland was held in the Mechanics Institute, but the attendance was comparatively small. A committee was formed of those present to solicit subscriptions, adding the names of Bishop Cowie and Archbishop Stein.

The protest of the Alert against the Toy was sustained by the Begatta Committee, and the race will have to be run with remaining races to-morrow.
A fire broke out at 9 o'clock to night in the premises S. C. Smith, Beresford street, iv some bales of flax, but was suppressed by the salvage corps and others. It was uninsured. Mr F. A. Whitaker, the member for Waipa, and Mr Seymour George, the member for Kodney, address their constituents to-morrow. This day. A Rat in a Corner. A deputation numbering fourteen electors of City West waited on Mr W. J. Hurst, M.H.R., this morning and presented a requisition asking him to convene a meeting of his constituents, and explain his change of sides in the recent session of Parliament. Having presented the address, Mr Hurst was proceeding to rend a statement which he had prepared, when the deputation refused to hear the statement, and insisted on a reply, " yes " or " no."
Mr Hurst requested them to allow him to reply in his own way. He did not intend at that time to enter into a defence of his political action.
The deputation again refused to hear his written statement, and withdrew-
The ordinary half-yearly meeting of the Union Sash and Door Company was held to-day. The profit was £3135, the undivided profits at the thirtieth- June being £3236. A dividend of 10 per cent, was declared and there was carried to the profit and loss new account, £2200.
