Auckland Regatta.
(Pbb Peess Association.)
Auckland, Yesterday.
The weather was everything that could be desired, and a spJendid sailiug breeze. The flagship, the steamer Tararua, Cap. tain Muir, was crowded with visitors, and the wharves and cliffs were_ lined ! with thousands of spectators. Owing to the breeze increasing the outrigger, fouroared gig, sculling and dingy races were postponed till tomorrow. The following are the events :— 1. Champion JBace—Brigantines, schooners and ketches of 25 tons and upwards. First prize, £100; second prize, cup, value £8 and £22 added ; third prize, £1Q; a special prize, a sextant to the master of the first vessel arriving of 50 tons and upwards. The course was round Tiritiri 'and back, about forty miles. The following were the entries :— Annie Wilson, topsail schooner, 150 tons; Mazeppa, schooner, 111 ton 3; Borealis, brigantine, 131 tons; Transit, topsail schooner, 79 tons ; Caledonia, schooner, 58 tons; Adah, ketch, 29 tons; Kyno, brigantine, 85 tons; Keward, schooner, 40 tons ; Fieetwing, schooner, 55 tons ; Mary Anderson, schooner, 52 tons; Sybil, topsail schooner, 150 tons. As it was known that Mr Barbour, of the Northern Wairoa, the builder of the Torea, bad brought round the Annie Wilson - and the Sybil to contest the
laurels of the Transit, the champion schooner of last year, additional interest was given to the event, and a considerable amount of money changed hands. At 9.30 exactly the gun was fired, and in an incredibly short space of time the eleven competing vessels were beating down the harbour, under a press of canvas, rounding the North Head in the following order:—Sybil, Transit, Annie Wilson, Caledonia, Fleetwing, Adah, liewarj, Borealis, Mrzeppa, By no, Mary Anderson. Going down the channel there was a leading wind, and the Sybil gradually forged ahead, and to the windward leading by half a mile, meanwhile the Annie Wilson overhauled the Transit and passed her. Borealis three quarters a mile astern with Caledonia in her rear, and the balance a long way astern. In passing the western shore of Tiri, the Transit which still held the third place, gained a considerable windward advantage on the Sybil, and the Annie Wilson by passing inside a sunken rock. In standing across for the Shearer rock the time taken showed the Sybil to have four minutes lead on the Annie. Wilson, the Transit to be three minutes behind the Annie Wilson, and the Borealis which made a very short board was about two minutes after the Transit. In going about on rounding Tiri Tiri the Sybil further increased her lead, the Transit set her square sail and held her own with the Annie Wilson a mile ahead, the Borealis to leeward and astern of the Transit, the Caledonia fifth, and the Mazeppa sixth. Passing the beacon of Bangitoto the Borealis kept close to the wind, and the Transit shot ahead, obtaining a slight lead, the Sybil and Annie Wilson not nearly so well ahead, the Transit having got a favorable puff". The Sybil first rounded the North Head at .2.25 p.m., and four minutes ahead of the Annie Wilson, and seven minutes ahead of the Transit. The latter boat, with ringtail and squaresail set, gained on her opponents up the harbour and the race resulted: Sybil, 2 hours 28mins. 30secs; Annie Wilson, 2 hours 30mins, 53secs.; Transit, 2 hours 34mins. 40secs.; Borealis, 2 hours 37mins. 40secs.; Caledonia, 2 hours 37mins. 40 sees.; Mazeppa, 2 hours 57mins. Beward, By no, Adah, and Fleetwing arrived in the order given, but all were well in the rear. The Transit has a time allowance of llmins. 40secs., and she therefore takes the first prize, the Sybil second, and Annie Wilson third, and the Borealis savesh erstakes.
