Hastings School District.

In pursuance of notice received from the Central Board of Education, Auckland, the usual annual election of seven householders as a local committee was held in the school last evening. Mr H. M. Jacobs being voted to the Chair, called on the Secretary of the out-going Committee (Mr W. J. Newby) to read the report and balance sheet. The report, which wan most comprehensive, shewed that, notwithstanding the serious falling off in the population during the year 1879, the average attendance of children to the school was little less than for the preceding year; that in the month of July prizes in books to the value of £3 rJs were awarded to the school children that three charges laid against the teacher, after a patient investigation by the committee, were found to be ground* less ; that during the year the school had been visited by Mr Peacock, Inspector of Schools, who expressed his approval of the manner in which the school was con* ducted, also of the gen rral proficiency of the children, and promised to use his endeavors to have a new school erected, as the present one is in very bad repair. The balance-sheet showed a balance-on hand of £5 5s sd. The report and balance-sheet were adopted.

The following gentlemen were nominated as the new Committee :—Messrs H. M. Jacobs, M. McKfahon, James Bennett, Holt, Boden, Newby, Neaves, Goonan, E. Johnson, Jones, Wills, E. M. fiawkes. Messrs Burns and Jackson, as scrutineers, assisted by the Chairman, declared the following as elected:— Messrs Hawkes, Newby, Boden, Wills, Goonan, Jones, and Johnson. After the usual vote of thanks to the Chairman, the proceedings terminated.
