She was insured for £3000 in a floating policy on cargo and vessel. A relic of prehistoric times. A remarkable discovery has been made near Mongonui, near Cape- Karakara. One of the sand hills on being blown away by the recent gales brought to view a heap of bones and the remains of a house. The natives know nothing of it* and have no tradition of a settlement or burial-place there. It is believed that on further examination.it will shew they are remains of a race inhabiting New Zealand prior to the immigration of the Maoris. Arrived : Tararua, from the South. William Andrews, baker, charged with obtaining money under false pretences from Hardwick, by means of a valueless cheque, was acquitted at the Police Court this morning, the evidence showed that the amount of the cheque, seven pounds bad since been deposited at the bank. Baker does not appear' to have had intention to wilfully defraud, but was in expectation of the money being deposited.
