SHORTLAND'S WANTS.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)
Sib,—On reading the report of the deputation re the river channel at Shortland, I find not only ignorance of facts which took place at the time of Sir J. Coode's visit, but ignorance of (or assumed) the importance of port. It is a well known fact to people of Shortland that Sir J. Coode accompanied one of our oldest and most respected citizens to the Kauaeranga river at the booms ; after this he obtained information from one of our sailors, who had traded at Shortland years before it became a goldfield, thus acquiring information that Captain Best could not give him. He said this information had been kept back from him. What for ? For the exclusion of Shortland. I would like to ask Mr Head how much he or any other person gave towards Burke street wharf, or why we should be called upon to pay for what the Harbor Board has wasted. I expect soon to see a motion tabled to erect a wharf at Tararu. For what other purpose is li. Graham a j member ? 1 cannot e'.osa this without thanking J, Leydon for his manly action. —Yours, <&c, . E. M.
