Mining Review of the Week.

The main point to which public attention has been dra^n during this week ig the extraordinary spurt of the Old Whan shares. Ever since the Alburnia obtained the gold in the 70 feet level, the •tockhai been slowly advancing in favour, but owing to the small number of sellers little business was done. The'whole claim is held by a few shareholders, representing 1000 shares, the balance having been forfeited for non-payment of calls. For several weeks the shares hung fire at 40s, but this week they have advanced to £5 per share. The ground is held by a party of tributers, and it understood that the directors have made an^arrangement wi^i them in accordance with which they/tfiiltyfc give up the remainder of their lease to the ™ company.. The shareholders will probably reform the company, making it one of 8000 shares, and giving to the tributers 2000 shares. It is doubtless ,on this probability that the shares had increased to their present value, which does not appear to us to be at all fictitious, seeing the exceedingly good prospects of the mine and the splendid reef they have at their disposal.

The stock of an almost forgotten company—the New North Devon—has also been to the tore.. A party of tributers are working the block from the Whan to the 70-feet level, and have the north, eastern continuation of the Alburnia reef, which is of large size and shows good mineral indications and some fine gold. It is said an arrangement will also be come to with these tributers, who'are somewhat handicapped in the working of it, having the block for but a short, time, while the air is very bad. Should the company get possession they would probably Jstart work on this promising reef at once. The Alburnia has been very quiet. There is a large output of rich crushing stuff from the mine, and it is evident there will be a good return for this month's crushing. '
