THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi FRIDAY, JANUARY 16, 1880.

In dealing with the deputation re the railway yesterday, Mr Whitaker'a remark's show he is strongly imbued with the spirit of the maxim that no man was ever written out of reputation hut by himself, and so careful is he of the reputation which he has gained through years of honorable service to his country, that he refuses to use his influence in the direction asked for by the deputation, Mr Whitaker, it would appear, owns a few acres of land on the line of the railway, and he appears to think that any abnormal action on his part to facilitate the pushing on of the line from the Thames end would be construed by. his political enemies into a gross piece of political jobbery for self benefit. We think Mr Wbitaker overdoes this exhibition of fine feeling, and to such an extent that many will be found to class it as bunkum—merely a flimsy excuse to evade doing what he cannot, or does not feel inclined, or at anyrate will not, do. Despite Mr Whitaker's published sentiments on the matter we sincerely trust that he will do his best lo further the interests of the Thames in the matter of the railway. He is the only Minister we have in this provincial district, and should he show any lukewarm ness in the matter of the railway our interests are, to a certain extent, bound to suffer.
