Trial of the Persons arrested for Sedition.

The trial of those persons who were arrested in connection with the disturbance in Ireland will commence on Friday next. Constantinople, January 14. The Sultan and his Minister, The Sultan has conferred the Order of i the Medjidie on the Turkish Minister of Police, who was accused of having ordered the arrest of a Mollab. or priest who translated the English Bible into the Turkish language. The accusation against 'the Minister is, however, denied. The Afghans still Fighting. In consequence of the menacing attitude of the Afghans General Uoberti has telegraph that he requires a large force to maintain British supremacy. The Afghans, notwithstanding repeated defeats at the hands of the British, are again menacing an attack in force. The latest news from Afghanistan states that Roberts routed the Afghans at Ghuznee with heavy loss. , Later The Kohistanis, whom General Baker recently dispersed, are concentrating their forces at Lundi, Ehotal and Dakka, in the vicinity of the Xhyber Pass. Other Afghan tribes, however, are reported to be quiet. An agreement has been made between Great Britain and the North German confederation and the States to recognise and support Mahetoa as King of Samoa. Germany as appointed a consul to represent her at Apia. The Bight Hon. H. U. E, Childen has returned from Canada. Victorian Matters. The Globe approves the reforms submitted to the electors of Victoria, a»d hopes a compromise will be effected, the Upper House having power of revising legislation. It deprecates a plebiscite.
