WAITAKA.
Yesterday. Opening Mokau Coal Mines.
The Hannah Mokau returned from Mokau this moaning, bringing 20 tons of coal. The steamer went up 2l miles, and anchored in five fathoms of water. Owing to a snag in the river they were unable to proceed further with safety. The goal was brought for a distance of six miles in canoes. The coal is immediately alongside the river bank, and the vessels could lay alongside and take in their cargo. The engineer states it is of excellent quality, and far superior to Bay of Islands coal.
