THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 14, 1880.
Fbequently of late have we referred to the distress in Ireland, and daily our telegrams mention that subscription lists in aid of a fund to relieve the suffering families have been opened in most of the principal towns in this and the neighboring colonies. That the people are suffer-ing-iseverely there can be no longer any doubt, and so widespread is the destitution | that the Government have considered it necessary to proceed with the construction of large public works, iv order that employment may be found for those in want of it. The Thames has seldom been behind hand in helping on any good work, and we should wish to see it maintain its good name on this occasion, and some of our more prominent citizens should take the matter in hand, and at once ask for subscriptions to supplement the fund being raised 1 in Auckland, or establish a fund to be sent direct from the district. How liberally the Thames people responded to the appeals on behalf of the sufferers by the Indian and Chinese famines, the Kaitangata disaster, and on many other occasions, then why be less benevolently inclined when men, women, and children of our own race are suffering ? We will say nothing further at present on the subject, but commend the suggestion to our readers, and until something more definite is done, we will be happy to receive subscriptions at our office, and will acknowledge the receipt of the same through our columns.
