Sib,—Will' you be kiad enough to insert the following letter to the-Oounty Council, forwarded by me to-day, just to let ratepayers know how contracts some* times are carried oat. # To the Chairman and Councillors Thanes , County Council, — Gentlemen,—At a meeting of if our Committee, of which Mr Carpenter was Chairman, and which was held somo time ago at Hastings, to investigate certain charges made by me, re contracts let and carried out in this district, and at which said meeting your Committee* ac* knowledjed that contracts were not carried out as troy ought to be, and furtherfjiore, promised that the Engineer. should he requested to attend to the proper fill fiU ment and carrying out of th^se contracts. I want now to inform yo^'.jsjfilem«n, that these promises have not beck kept, i
for instance, Butler's contra^t^etween Waiomo and Hastings, which i believe it paid for, will take about £100 more to finish it, as per specification j then there is Mr Hawkes' contract between Hastings and Mercury Bay, which will take about another £30 to complete, according to specification. Now, gentleman, I want you take into consideration, have your Engineers and Foremen of Works done their duty according to promises made by the aforesaid Committee, and have they kept faith with the public, or have they acted on their own responsibility P If the latter, it is only a farce to, call for more tenders for work to let. I should like a searching enquiry to be made into . these charges, af I can substantiate them.—l am, <fee.,'
