No Demonstrations of Welcome.
Sir Hercules Robinson left Auckland this morning by a special train for^Taikato, accompanied by the Honp F. Whitaker, Hon J. Williamson, and Mr R. Fergusson. On reaching Hamilton he was driven by Mr E. H| D. F^rjusson In his four-in-hand to Umbridge. Beyond the flying of flags, there was no demonstration at Hamilton or Cambridge. ". ' ' . ' A nev Arrival in Trouble, At the; Police Court, John Smitton surrendered his bail, and appeared in answer to a breach of the Customs regulation by landing ten revolvers; with intent to defraud the Customs; also in answer to a breach of the Arms Act, by importing the said revolvers without a license under the Act. After hearing the evidence, the court ordered the full penalty of £100 to be paid to the Collector of Customs, costs £5155. ;, Sub-Inspector Pardy said that as the defendant was a new arrival, and had to suffer for his first offence, the police had no desire' to press a charge under the .Arms Act. His Worship said that if the police had perserved in it the result would have been three years penal servitude.
