The Eotomahana is advertised to leave the Goods' Wharf at a quarter past seven o'clock on New Year's Day—leafing Auckland on the return trip at six o'clock in the evening, This arrangement will suit intending visitors to the races, and with fine weather will no doubt be taken advantage of, as the passage money is only five shillings for the trip.
A tbip across the gulf to the Miranda can be enjoyed on New Tear's Day by taking advantage of the special trip of the Te Aroha. The little steamer will leave Curtis' wharf at seven o'clock sharp, returning about six in the evening. The fare is very low, 4s fcr adults, and Is 6d for children. -
A meeting of Mr Win. Wilkinson's friends is called for Friday evening at Shortland.

In Dunedin extra precautions have been taken by. the police, in order to prevent a repetition of last week's disgraceful proceedings on New Year's Day, when all persons found grossly misconducting themselves will bo charged with riot. The City Council, with a view to assisting the police, have agreed to keep all lamps burning throughout the night.
The llev. Dr Roseby, of Donedinj in a discourse referred to the Timaru riot, and expressed an opinion that the mere wearing of any regalia should not hare resulted in such an affray, but indicated his disapprobation of tbe desire to sanction anything calculated to insult the religious feelings of any section of the community.

Me Eihson, the American inventor, claims to have made the discovery of a simple electric household lamp, consisting of charred paper placed on a glass etfobe, costing a shilling. A simple machine supplies sufficient electric current for 50 such lamps.

At the Police Court this morning before H. Kenrick. Esq., two lads named Walter and William Willetts were charged with stealing a vest, a pair of boots, gold ring and chain, and a silver watch from tue dwelling of Wm. Reed, Parawai, in last July. It appears the lads were suspected at tho time of the robbery, but the police have up to the present been unable to prove the offence against them. A day or so before the races the youngest lad sold one of the rings to a person, and tho police recognising the article made enquiries, which led to tho arrest of the youths. The case was remanded till to-morrow.
The Industrial Exhibition of Sydney, containing 1000 exhibits, was opened on the 23rd by Sir H. Parkes.
At the final meeting last night of the stewards of tho late race meeting at Parnwai, tho disqualification was taken off the jockey. James Tanner.

We noticed to-day in the shop of Mr Hall, chemist, a small but very templing show of fruit, consisting of two varieties of peaches, and two of pears grown by that gentleman in Mackay street. Judging by appearances, the quality would be all one could wish, aud the Thames people would do well to cultivate these early varieties of the fruit, in preference to those more generally grown.
The members of the Stock Exchange advertise in another column that they will close their offices certain days this week. To-morrow evening sharp at 7 o'clock tho books will close, so intending purchasers of Alburnias, Kuranuis, or even Cures should make haste or a good thing may be missed. It is said the man that hesitates is lost, and it is well-known being in good time when dealing in scrip is everything. •
