PORT CHALMERS.
Last night. Sailed: Prairie, for Hobartown; Cor for Oamaru.
Arrived: Wild Ware from Xaipar PHnoe Hogan, barque, from Mauritius, with 250 tons sugar after a passage of 47 days. She reports meeting a strong gale from Tasmania up to land. The ship Taranaki from London, 81 days, brings 230 passengers and 1190 tons of cargo. On November 15th, at 11 p.m., in Lat. 38 S., Long. 6 W., Br George Thomas Baird Moffatt, the ship's surgeon, went aloft for a -wager with a saloon passenger, and coming down over the main-topgallant yard missed his hold, struck the ratlins and fell into the sea. The ship was going about 6 knots, and there was a very rough sea on, the vessel wearing heavily. The helm was instantly put down, and the yards brought aback. A boat got out and pulled in the direction in which it was thought Dr Moffatt was, but after searching for an hour without avail, she returned.
