THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1879.
Attektion is directed to the time table of our Auckland ateamers. It will be found facilities are offered to Thames residents to get to Auckland, see the races, and back again without a loss of much time.
The old Prince Alfred battery was sold this morning by Mr Carpenter under instructions from the County Coancil, for the sum of £'600 to Mr Thomas Macfarlane, acting, it is said, on behalf of the Alburnia Gold Mining Company. We have receired from the editor, the 18th number of Enoch. We would direct attention tc the adrertisetnent appearing in another column re Mr Wood re-opening in business at Wade's shop, Pollen street. Mr Wood's window shows a choice collection of fruit, and his stock is well worthy of inspection and trial.
Mb James Marshall has subscribed £10 towardi laying the Pollen street 9-inch mains.
Mb G-. JS". Brassey, Coroner, will hold an enquiry at the Imperial Hotel to-mor-row morning at 11 o'clock, into the circumstances attending the late fire.
A meeting will be held at the Gorernor Bowen this evening for the purpose of arranging the programme of sports to be held at Tararu Gardens on New Year's Day.
We hare been shown by Mr Gibbons, Secretary to the Naval Cadets, a sample of the ammunition sent to that corps by the Government. From its appearance we .should think it old enough to hare been present at the battle of Waterloo. The whole case was rotten, the contents fbeiug a mass of rubbish. This is certain ly aot at all creditable to the authorities of the Defence Department.
The engineers sro putting the finishing touches to tho engines of th« new steamer, builfc for the Thames Produce Company, and the little vessel will be launched in a day or so. Bhe is about the same size as the Vivid, and will bo a Taluable addition to our rirer fleet.
Mb Wynne Gray writes:—ln the distribution of the district prizes at the* Academy of Music, last night, a slight mistake was made when awarding tht drawing prize to W. G. Edmunds, of th§ Kauaeranga Boys' School, whereat he is (although at present attending the Elauaeranga Boys" School) virtually a pupil of the Waiotahi Creek School. He also raceived honourable mention as a pupil of the Sauaoranga Boys' School instead of oae of the Waiotahi Creek School. Mr Horatio Phillips quite with me in this matter, and Acknowledges him as one of my pupils, he having been entered from my school.
Ws would call attestion to tho advertisement i» another colrnnn re tho Christmas Tree and Entertainment at the Tararu Eoad Wesleyan Sunday School this eTening.
No one attended the meeting convened by Mr S. Alexander for the purpose of forming a salvage corps to work in conjunction with tlfto fire brigades. This is not as it should be, and we hope this will not be allowed to drop. Might not the members of the Naval Brigade or the Engineers or some other volunteer company, offer to act as a salvage corps. A simple badge would be all that would be required in the shape of a uniform and we hare no doubt that the Insurance Companies would willingly subscribe something towards meeting the small expences of the corps.
