AUCKLAND.
Last night. The Southern race horses, per Arawata, arrived safely. Benjamin Duval, for forgery, was committed for trial. Mr Swansea's Reception. The Newton constituency are arranging to giro Mr Swanson a banquet on his return from Wellington. The Mayor declined to preside at a meeting of the unemployed, though willing to aid them in other ways. The meeting was postponed till to-morrow evening, owing to the inclemency of the weather. Souse on Fire through Lightning. Daring the thunderstorm this morniog, the houie of It. B. Shalders, in Upper Queen »treet, occupied by Major Withers, was struck by lightning and set on fire. It entered a room where Mrs Withers and servant were standing, going up and exploding the gas-pipe, and out of the roof, setting lire to the room, paper, and rafters. The fire was suppressed. The New Zealand Insurance Company make good the damage.
