The weolrly report on " Oar Miuei," we publish in another column, pressure on oar space in Satuvdaj'i issue compelled us to bold it crer.

Pbom information we have received we learn that tho Legislature have made the following fresh alterations in the tariff: — Suit free, all candles other thau tallow -|d per lb. extra, patent medicines increased from 10 per cent, to 15 per cent, fruits wet and fresh (on which an impost was proposed to be levied) free, Australian wine, extra 2s per gallon, making the duty on it 4s per gallon.

There was no business at the B.M> Court to-day.

On Friday a youth named Condon bad a narrow escape from drowning. He was bathing iv the Kauaerunga opposito the rifle range, when he got out of his depth, and had sunk twice when he was rescued by Mr Thomas Pick, a compositor at the Advertiser, and formerly an employee on this paper.

Mr Hall's reading of tho telegram in the House, announcing the floating of tho loan twice over, was received with cheers, which chnuged to laughter when Mr Ileevos fugues ted it was a pity to disappoint the home capitalists, and the Government had better telegraph home to take the lot.

On Saturday afternoon Colonel Fraser entered a plaint requesting the owners of the Big Pump to hand that property over to him on the plea that it is held under Miners' Eights of 1866 and that the present owners have no such Miners' flights. The matter will come before the Warden's Court in a day or so.

Mb Vebnon, the local agent for the Norwich Union Insurance Company, showed us on Saturday a cheque for tho amount (£SO) of insurance on Mr Wood's building, destroyed in the late tire. It is creditable to the company to be so prompt in their payments.

The anniversary services of the Primitive Methodist Sunday School were held in the Academy of Music yesterday. Owing to the unfavorable state of the weather the attendance at the morning and afternoon services was only moderate, but in the evening the building was well filled. The children sang their hymns very creditably, and tho sermons were preached by the Her. G. Smith, pastor.of the Church. To-morrow evening the annual soiree will be held in the Church, Mackay «treet, when a programme as usual on occasions of this kind will be gone through. . ,

We have several times had to chronicle incidents showing the pluck and promptitude of a young man named ltoiton, whereby several persons have-been rescued from a watery grave. On Saturday he was to add another name to his list. Mr Souter, juur., who had been enjoying a sail aloue in the harbor endeavored to make the Shortland wharf. He found the wind would not suit, and the, tide having turned he was drifting rapidly from the point he wished to reach. He took to the oars, but found them useless, being too large. The anchor was then restorted to, but would not hold, and he was in a very dangerous predicament, as he wai a mile, from land, evening drawing on, and the water rough. Fortunately for young Souter, Rolton noticed his danger from the wharf, and hastily manned a waterman's boat, and with three or four boys he'started oft to the rescue. When he came alongside skiff he found it partially swamped. Iso time was lost in towing the disabled boat back to Shortland. We certainly think that Hoi ton's conduct on this and similar occasions deserves recognition.
