MINING REVIEW OF THE WEEK.
The events of the past week in the mining world here not been devoid of interest. Two companies hare declared dividends of 2s 6d per share, viz., <he Moanatairi and Thames 6.M. Go's. The difidend of tbe former was expected to be larger, but nevertheless is satisfactory considering the large expences of tbe mine and the fact that they are not at present working on very rich quartz. The Thames G.M.Co. is not a "gold mining company" in the legitimate meaning of the words, but simply an association owi.ing shares in other mines Tbe dividends of Alburnia and Waiotahi Companies hare enabled the directors to declare the dividend.
There was some little stir in the Alburoia early last week, in consequence of the report that gold bad been found in the reef at the 160 feet level. The sbare3 rapidly advanced from 57s 6d to 85s, and almost as quickly receded again. Of course those who bought with the flow, and sold out before the ebb ere satisfied; those, however, who got stranded are the reverse. The mine is looking well, and there is so doubt but that there are several good dividends yet to come out of the block now being operated on. With the improvement in price of tho Alburnia so also did the Old Whaus rise —being quoted at 22s or one hundred per cent, better than their previous current price. This mine i 3 traverced by the lode now being worked by the Alburnia, and it the 70 feet level the latter company lias worked to within about 35 feet of the boundary between the two mines. It has been rumored that the Alburnia directors wish to purchase the Old Whau ground, and it would appear that an amalgamation of the two claims is desirable.
