Among the notices of motion was one for the suspension of the itaading orden as to the passage of bills, till the end of the session, and another that all the bills | not-passed this: se asion should bMakttt 1 up next year at the stage they were left. 13 bills came up from the. Lower Hodm and passed their first reading. The Land . Act Amendment Bill was read a third time, after an attempt by Col. Whitmore to insert a clause exempting, some, baah selectors in Hawkes Bay from personal residence. There was also considerable , discussion on the Maori Prisoners Trial - Bill, but there was little new elicited. - Capt. Fraser warned the Government that if the prisoners were kept at< DaMdiii during the winter many would* die of- the cold.- s It was asserted by 000 speaker, that a greed for land by, the Government!* prevented' the -settlement of- these 'quiet*' tions, which Mr Whitaker denied, saying the whole of the plains wen nothing as compared to the peace of r the, eppttrr^ fie also denied the rumor that thei'Gp*" 1* veroment intended some violent action it > regard to the re-occupation of the lands." The Bill was then read a. aeeead time. ,> Council adjourned till 7.30.
