CHRISTCHURCH.
At the E.M. Court, E. Davis, Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court, was charged on 5 informations of filling unstamped declarations under the Debtor and Creditors Act. Mr Cowlinshaw presented on behalf of the Auditor General, and stated that during the month of November, the attention of the Auditor General was drawn to fact that there was a deficiency of over £50 worth of stamps. An opportunity has been afforded defendant of recouping money, but he had not availed himself of it. The Crowh Prosecutor had been consulted, and he had given it as his opinion that on technical grounds an information for larceny or embezzlement would not lay. The only course that remained was to lay an information under the Stamps Act for the recovery of* penalties incurred. < For first offehce a fine of £5 wa« imposed, for 2nd £10, for 3rd £15, for 4th, sth, and 6th £20 each, makiug a total of £90 with court fees and expenses of witnesses. The Bench expressed an opinion that the defendant had been dealt with very leniently.
