OUR MINES.
ALBU&NIA.
By the courtesy of Mr 1? ad ford, we are j enabled to publish a copy of his weekly report to the directors :—" Geutiemen, —I have the honor to report as follows, viz : —160 Feet Level, iiast.—Driving has been continued on this level, the reef being about two feet wide, and shewing colors of gold when shot down. .160 Feet Level, West.— A. party of men hare been engaged in cleaning out and repairing this level, and laying a tramway ; since when, there have been eight or nine feet of the* reef stripped, but none has been shot down as yet. I purpose /breaking down during the week. I expect to have to drive here about 60 feoJL before reaching the shot of gold coming down from'the 70 feet lerel. 70 Feet Level, East.— Sloping has been carried on during the fortnight on good crushing dirt, and a few specimens occasionally. 70 Feet Level, West. —Driving and- stoping has been carried on in this level. The quartz broken down from this portion of the mine crushes splendidly, and there is a constant supply of good picked stone and specimens. The reef in this drive is at preaent eight feet wide, always showing gold, and leaving good gold under foot. The reef iu.stopec still continues the same as per last report. We are now so far from No. 1 winze, that to obtain good ventilation I found it necessary to sink a winze from the Whau Level, which, when, completed, will give me every facility for filling in the stopes with tljo mullock, and enable me to push on the work with greater expedition. Battery.—For the last fortnight wo have had ten head of stampers engaged. I have now put on five more head, all of which I will endeavor to keep constantly employed. There have been crushed during the last month 257 ton* of quartz for the return of 30390zs lOdwts melted goldi or an average of llozs lfidwts per I t O O, —(gd.) Thomas Hadford."
A Useless Machine.—This odd adrertiseraent is from an English newspaper: "My husband.is out on strike. Ho prefers that to work. He ain't'of anj use to mo. I must work to keep the children aii& myself. His ten Bbitliugs goes in beer.' I'll swap htm while he's on strike for a lowing machine." *" ' _
