By the Hero, just arrived at Auckland to-day, we have tho following English and Australian items :— Eibbonism Rampant, A Ribbon Society has commenced operations in the West of Ireland — centering principally in Mayo. Tho agentof the. Marquis of Sligo was fired at without effect. Smith, the son of the agent, jumped from the car without giving his assailants time to re-load, and shot one dead with the rifle he carried.

Intimidaliou is as much exercised against Jaw-abiding farmers as against landlords.

The English revenue returns show large deficiencies-, at least £1,200,000 for the year making a deficit for three years of six millions. ." „ Trouble at the Caps. Iv the Transvaal, Sir Garnet Wblscley has great trouble with the Boers. Thn laws of the colony being insufficient to deal .with the trouble. An edict was issued, prohibiting the sale of powder without a permit. A number of Boers applied for permits, and being refused, broke into the store and taking what powder they wanted, left the money to pay for it en the counter. An order for their arrest being issued, the friends of the accused men refused to allow the leader to be taken.

Zululand is settling down. John Dunn is Chief of the most important district, and refuses to bllow missionaries in bis territory except on certain terms—two of which are th-it they shall not trade in cattle or buy land. ;
